How to Build a Semi-Privacy Fence with Top Lattice

A look at the finished Fence. 6 foot tall with added 1 foot of lattice on top.

I started with an AutoCAD model to get the design down and calculate how much material I would need. I simply counted the material used in one 8 foot section and multiplied it by how many sections I had (I believe I had 11 sections).

This is after day one which was digging the post holes with one man auger. The ground is clay around her so was a pain. each hole is 4 feet deep and took about 2 bags of premix concrete to secure each 12 foot 4x4 post.

2x4s on the top and bottom are what carry the load of the fence slats. They are secured at both ends with 2x4 metal hangers nailed to the 4x4 post.

The 2x4 mounted on top horizontally of the middle 2x4 is pre-slotted to accept the lattice. It was simply screwed down to the middle 2x4.

The 1x6 fence boards were spaced with a 2x4. Each board received 6 nails, 3 in the top and bottom with a triangle nailing pattern to avoid splitting. A table saw was used to rip boards if we ended with too much of a gap at the end of a section.

The start of the fence was secured to a 2x4 mounted to the brick column instead of a 4x4 post cemented into the ground as the footing of the brick post was too large underground. 2 small pre-slotted 2x4 pieces were added to each side of each section. Then the lattice was cut to size and slid into place. Then the last 2x4 pre-slotted piece capped off the lattice with a couple screws into the vertical small pieces of pre-slotted 2x4. Lastly the 4x4 post were cut down with a circular saw and capped with a tapered post cap.
