How to Build Storage Room Shelves

Here is the finished product 3 walls covered with shelves 3 high with 18 inches of clearance each.

The first step was to cut all the lumber for the cross bracing. The melamine board in 24 inches wide (had home depot cut 4x8 sheets into halves for free) so you subtract 2 2x4 widths from 24 inches and cut them to 21 inches long.

I assembled the frame on the floor. The 2x4x12s were cut to match the wall length and the cross bracing was added every 24 inches. every brace received 2 screws in each end.

When I got the frames completed to help me install them (because they are very heavy and long) I temporarily installed scrap 2x4 to the right height to support the ends while I attached the rear of the shelf to the walls.

Once the shelves were screwed to the walls I can remove the temporary blocks and lay down the melamine board and screw it down every 18 inches.

As there is no wall to install temporary holds on this end I rigged up a temporary 2x4 vertical piece to support everything during install.

Here is the permanent 2x4 vertical brace to support the end not attached to the wall.

The most important part of this install is the vertical 2x4s that stretch from the floor to the top shelf as they make the shelves 4 fold stronger. You can easily rest several people on the shelves with no issue.
